Testimonial

I was honored to be invited to meet with a family who was seeking home care services for their ill
mother. She was being skilled, and those limited days were rapidly coming to an end. The meeting was
with the patient’s elderly frail husband, daughter, son, and Rabbi. Their concern was that she was soon
to be discharged home, and unable to care for herself. The children lived in New York and the husband
was unable to provide the necessary care for his wife of seventy-one years. Additionally, the family did
not have the resources to provide the home care required. As our conversation continued I learned that this couple met at Auschwitz and after their release married.

I was working for hospice at the time, and the family’s hope was that hospice would be able to provide
the desperately needed assistance at home. As she was not terminally ill, I was unable to admit her, but
knew she needed some intricate social services involvement. I could not walk away, and after making
some calls I located an agency which specializes in assisting Holocaust survivors. The family was thrilled, and the facility’s case manager was appreciative as well.

This woman was able to return home and experience the dignity and care she deserved, surrounded by
her loved ones. I was glad that I could advocate for her and make a difference in this dear family’s life.
